About
Doctoral researcher in aerospace robotics, working on semantic SLAM and situational-awareness architectures for UAVs.
Background
I am Jason Wakim Richards, a doctoral researcher at SnT, University of Luxembourg, where since November 2025 I have been developing semantic relational SLAM and situational-awareness architectures for UAVs. My work spans C++ and Python development, ROS 2 and PX4 integration, OpenVINS-based estimation, and embedded Linux on Raspberry Pi with camera and IMU sensing, supported by Docker-based tooling, Kalibr calibration, and simulation, laboratory, hardware, and flight testing.
Before starting doctoral research, I worked as an AOCS/GNC engineer intern at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage. I led LiDAR test activities during the iBB3 and iBB4 breadboard campaigns supporting a Sample Fetch Rover concept demonstration. I also built a networked ROS sensor test bench and developed C/C++ GNC simulation software with synthetic camera imagery and LiDAR scans, alongside investigations into terrain generation and lunar-rover planning.
My student space projects include JamSail, where I led AOCS/ADCS development: subsystem requirements, interfaces, a verification plan, embedded C flight software, and Linux attitude simulation. For IDET-Sat, I worked on requirements, system architecture, and subsystem interfaces. I hold a First-Class MEng in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Nottingham.
From 2024 to 2026 I also volunteered with UKSEDS, progressing from Olympus Rover Trials volunteer to Competitions Management Co-Lead.
